What is BAER Testing?

BAER (pronounced “bear”) testing is a non-invasive and painless diagnostic procedure used to evaluate hearing in dogs by measuring brain wave activity in response to sound. This test is the gold standard for identifying hearing loss—whether partial or complete—and is especially useful for breeds predisposed to congenital deafness.

During the test, tiny electrodes are placed on the pet’s head, and auditory stimuli (clicking sounds) are delivered through earphones. The resulting electrical activity from the brainstem is recorded and interpreted by our neurology team.

Who Should Get a BAER Test?

BAER testing is recommended for:

  • Breeders seeking OFA certification for hearing in litters

  • Owners of breeds at risk for congenital deafness, such as Dalmatians, Bull Terriers, Australian Shepherds, and Boxers

  • Pets with suspected hearing issues, including unresponsive behavior or asymmetric reactions to sound
