Jeffrey Laifer

Dr. Jeffrey Laifer is a dedicated veterinary neurologist with over six years of experience since earning his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 2018. He began his academic journey with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from New York University in 2010. Dr. Laifer completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at VCA Shelton and Norwalk in Connecticut in 2019, followed by a specialized internship in neurology and neurosurgery at BluePearl North Florida Neurology in Orange Park, FL, in 2020. He further honed his skills during a residency at Dogwood Veterinary Referral Hospital in Farmington, MI, which he is set to complete in 2024.

Dr. Laifer's passion for veterinary medicine was ignited in his youth when he cared for his beloved dog, Lucky, who suffered from chronic kidney disease and a suspected intervertebral disc herniation. His experiences with veterinary care demonstrated the profound impact that effective treatment and communication can have on pets' lives. This formative journey led him to develop a keen interest in neurology during veterinary school, where he was captivated by the intricate and multifaceted nature of the nervous system. His dedication to this field was further solidified through an externship at the University of Ghent in Belgium.

Throughout his career, Dr. Laifer has developed special interests in neurosurgery, meningoencephalitis, seizures, and movement disorders. His research contributions were recognized with the ACVIM Resident Research Award in 2023 for his work on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 concentrations in dogs with non-infectious meningoencephalitis.

Fluent in Spanish and currently practicing Portuguese and Dutch, Dr. Laifer prides himself on effective communication with pet parents from diverse backgrounds. He shares his home with Lucy, a Bluetick Coonhound/Dalmatian mix, and enjoys spending his weekends engaged in outdoor activities such as soccer, jogging, cycling, and kayaking. A fan of the English Premier League, Dr. Laifer also enjoys cooking, traveling, and relaxing at the beach with a cup of tea.
